Durban Surf Spots, KZN

Durban Surf spots, KZN

The Indian Ocean makes Durban and it’s North and South
Coast’s extremely sought after with the warm waters fusing together with the
most consistent swell traps in the world. At the centre of this is the city,
surf city, a stretch known as the Golden Mile starting at the southern end with
Ushaka Beach, right way through to Blue Lagoon at the river mouth.

Sandwiched between these two distances are the piers, the
meeting places for all surfers as the waves roll into these structures with
force creating slow waves, tubes, quick waves and crumbling waves all depending
on the conditions and beach chosen. New Pier is perhaps the best beach with similar
quality surfers ripping it up daily, however more than enough surfing solutions
are out there along the Golden Mile, go out and choose your own peak. South
Westerly winds are the conditions needed but wetsuits are not for the majority
of the year.

Other spots in this region north and south of the city worth
checking out include Umzumbe, Ballitto, Umhlanga, Kelso, Hibberdene,
Greenpoint, Salt Rock and the list goes on and on.

Notable Surf Spots in South Africa

Notable Surf Spots in South Africa

SA has an untold amount of surf spots around along it’s
borders each more than capable of wasting an entire day, week or even year at.

Elands bay is a 3 hour drive up the West Coast from Cape
Town and is completely worth it. A different kind of atmosphere takes over as
the hours mount up during the drive with the vegetation changing drastically,
it become frontier territory, a brilliant build up to the wave. It’s good to
know that Elands waves work best in summer but that doesn’t mean it’s going to
be a warm exercise, in fact the opposite, wetsuits and hoodies are needed
almost all year round. The South-Easter gives the waves all the oomph it needs
with a westerly swell producing a cranking left point break.

Dungeons, if anyone knows what that means they know we are
near Hout Bay except out to see over a shallow reef, what are we doing there
you ask, something stupid is the response. Dungeons is known as one of the
world’s “big wave” venues where jet ski’s pull surfers into cranking 30-foot
sets. The newest craze for locals is to body surf this monster, we say good
luck you’re on your own!

Garden Route Surf Spots

Garden Route Surf Spots

In the Garden Route just about all that makes South Africa
one of a kind comes together beautifully, the stunning scenery, old school
villages, weather and the beaches; an absolutely marvellous nook in the
country. However we aren’t here to talk about scenery, villages or weather are
we, well I know I’m not, I’m here to touch the subject of surfing in the Garden
Route.

Buffels Bay is located only a short drive from the beautiful
Knysna and what t lacks in surfing prestige it more than makes up for in
surfing atmosphere with a cosy village view nestled behind. When I say it lacks
prestige I mean to explain it by saying its not noted for its waves due to the
amount of people that surf it, but that only means it will be un-crowded. And
guess what it’s a point break, who doesn’t enjoy a good consistent point break.

Other brilliant breaks both point and shore  break’s lay along the coast of the Garden
Route all more than capable of earning every surfer the wave of their life’s.
Quick hint, check out Mossel Bay area both north and south of it, well worth
the trip for these hidden gems.

Jeffrey’s Bay and Cape St Francis Surf Spots

Jeffrey’s Bay and Cape St Francis

Anyone who’s anyone in the surfing world has heard about the mega waves located in the Eastern Cape with countless surf documentaries capturing the rolling waves of thunder annually. This district produces wave after wave of perfection every day, however two icon status spots are Jeffreys Bay and Cape St Francis.

J-Bay as it is affectionately known is home to Supertubes, one of the world’s top spots if not the top spot. Consistency is this points biggest advantage daily giving birth to one of the longest tube rides in the world slowly opening onto another point known as The Point; we say stretch before you paddle out as the legs begin to give after a couple of waves.

Cape St Francis is often confused with St Francis Bay, was made famous in the surfing world by Endless Summer, the 60’s surfing movie, naming it the best break in the world. Today its known as Bruce’s Beauties, a break that literally keeps the wave up for kilometres with hollow sections and big gaps allowing an assortment of turns and tricks. It’s brilliant. Seal Point near the lighthouse is also worth a look as are many more shore breaks around this area.

Scuba diving

Scuba diving is an experience that people often enjoy doing especially when on coastal outings, very relaxing and calm scuba diving opens up a whole new and different world underwater where you can find all different types of fish that reside in the sea.

Scuba is an acronym for self contained underwater breathing apparatus, and with it one has the opportunity to see what life underwater is like. There are also formal scuba diving certificates that prove that are attainable if one wants to become a qualified scuba diver.

Divers have a number of reasons as to why they dive sometimes it’s for research but most time it is all about recreational purposes. All divers have equipment that they need when diving such as:
• Fins
• Masks
• A Tank
• Gauges
• Watch

Extra equipment such as wet suits, hoods and gloves depend on the weather of the place where diving takes place, scuba diving is fun to learn and do.

Surfing

Life by coastal area is something to be desired, especially by those living in urban areas it all seems like the perfect with hanging out at the beach, surfing, seeing beautiful people and all in all taking it easy, in a city such as Cape Town the working day for most companies end at 12 in the afternoon on Fridays… now that is the life.

Take the Jump

Take the Jump

Bungee jumping is where willing participants attach a special cord to their ankles and after a fair amount of persuasion and at times thinking they are not going to do this, they throw themselves into the air and hurtle down towards the ground. Before the ground gets a little to close for comfort the cord pulls tight and the jump is successful.

South Africa has a claim to the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. The Bloukrans Bungee Jump, situated in the Garden Route, will have you falling 216 metres towards the ground. There are many jumps that can be taken in South Africa, which will give you that thrill you are looking for. There is the Bloukrans Bridge Bungy Jump, the Bungee Mogale, the Power Swing across Soweto, the Big Swing and many more.

Find a bungee jump in your area and just jump!

Canyoning/Kloofing

Freedom is thrill most people seek, canyoning is a sense of liberation that adrenaline junkies participate in, seeing as most well adjusted people in society suffer from minor mental oppression a select few constantly find new means to break free from the chains that hold them back and performing life changing stunts such as kloofing.
Canyoning or kloofing as it is known in South Africa is the sport of jumping of high mountain cliffs into the waters the ice cold water below. With canyoning you need to follow a mountain stream down its floating course this helps determine the best jump site and ultimately you jump ends with you in the swimming in the water below.
The sites one experiences with canyoning are extremely beautiful especially in South Africa, the land is beautiful and tranquil the environment enforces a strong soothing aura with the only alarming sounds being the screams on the way down into the water.
